A St. Aidan's High School pupil signed on an 'S' form in 1993. He had been playing with Craigneuk Colts and Shotts YM then went into the CBC at U14 level. Progressed through to U16 level then taken on by the club in 1995.

Helped win the '96 BP Youth Cup (on for Brian Vaugh in the 4-1 win over Dundee in the final 30.4.96) and also featured alongside namesake Pat in the reserve team that season. Despite this he was one of six young players released in May 1996: along with Kevin Docherty, Tommy Wilson, Steve Hamill, Marty Coughlin (who came back for at least part of 96/97) and John Ford.

Since then Hugh has enjoyed a long and successful career in the junior ranks. He featured in a January 1999 Junior Cup tie for Stoneyburn against Maryhill, in which veteran former CBC player Danny Diver hit the winner for Maryhill. The match programme listed Kelly's favourite food and drink as chips and buckfast – which may explain why he was competing at junior rather than senior level!

He moved to Ayrshire cracks Cumnock in 2001 and stayed there until he finished 03-04 with a short spell at Cumbernauld United. Then came a one-year stop at Petershill in 04-05, before 18 months at Kilsyth Rangers.

In autumn 2007 Kelly linked up with Shotts Bon Accord, explaining that his work as a local postman necessitated the move to his local club. Here he linked up with his old Celtic youth goalie Andy McCondichie. Kelly then switched to Lanark United for 2009-10.
