A product of Celtic Boys Club midfielder Peter Mackie joined the senior Bhoys full time in August 1976.
Impressive performances in the Celtic youth ranks meant that Mackie was the latest youngster to be hailed ‘the next big thing’ but like so many before and after him he was to never fulfil his early potential.
Mackie’s debut came as a sub for Frank Munro in a 1-1 League Cup match at home to Stirling Albion on October 26th 1977 and he made his full debut in the unlikely position of right back against St.Mirren in the league cup on November 16th.
He was however destined to remain second fiddle to Davie Provan in the Parkhead pecking order and so in November 1979 he left for Dundee in search of first team football although there was some surprise at the time at Celtic agreeing to his departure for a fee of £35,000.
He was instrumental in Dundee's shock 5-1 against Celtic at Dens in April 1980 and scored one of Dundee's goals that day.
