Outside-right John McArdle signed for Celtic in June 1926 from St Anthony’s.

It was said:

“Who gets McArdle gets a good boy… he can score goals, make opportunities for others”. (1924)
“A warning to Pat Connolly; if McArdle gest a chance at outside-right, he will be difficult to displace”. (1926)

The Gorbals-born player made his only competitive Bhoys appearance when he was in the side which defeated Dunfermline 2-1 at Parkhead on April 2nd 1927 (deputising for Adam McLean who was away on international duty), and despite the warning to Pat Connolly above, he ultimately posed no threat to him.

John McArdle couldn’t force himself into the first team picture, and was said to have been “a quiet clean-playing little fellow, troubled by injuries” which likely explains his lack of involvement with the first team.

He was released by the club in the summer of 1927 when he returned to the junior ranks.

He was a crack junior player apparently, the toast of Garngad for St Roch. He broke his collarbone playing for the Franks in May 1936, but like Willie Leitch he enjoyed the game too much and moved to the Isle of Bute to play further with Rothesay Royal Victoria.
