Stocky red-haired right-back William McCallum signed for Celtic from Hibernian in 1890 and made his debut in a 1-0 Scottish Cup victory at home to Rangers on 6th September 1890.

“He is a back of great promise, coaches his team in proper style, sees that they train”.

That game was regarded by some commentators as possibly “the first titanic struggle between the clubs“.

He played soon after in a 2-2 draw with Carfin Shamrock in the Scottish Cup. Sadly, he did not play in the return leg (a 3-1 away victory) played in front of an estimated 6000 at Byreknowes Park. Carfin Shamrock may now be long gone but the area was to become a diehard Celtic area.

By trade he was a printer for the Glasgow News and Celtic’s reserve team skipper.

Despite being the captain of the reserve side, Willie McCallum’s first team opportunities were limited and he made few appearances. The league had only begun in season 1890-91, and it was initially a short league program of just 18 games which partly answers for why chances were limited.

Note: Please note that records weren’t as well kept back in the early days as they later were to be, so there can be some inconsistency between certain records of how many games and which games he played in.

The Kilbirnie-born player moved on to join West Bromwich Albion in January 1892. However he was soon back up north that year to play for Wishaw Thistle, and then moved to Dundee Harp and then on to Coatdyke Gaelic.
