Biog

Full-back William McDonald was a junior internationalist when he joined Celtic from Dumbarton Fern in August 1893.

After a series of friendly appearances he made his competitive debut in a 5-0 league defeat to Leith Athletic on 17th March 1894. A complaint had been made by some clubs that owing to the uneven nature of the surface of Bank Park, that Leith Athletic were given an advantage over opposing teams, and possibly this scoreline proved it but Celtic were without star players Dan Doyle and Sandy McMahon.

Essentially used as emergency cover for Celtic’s more established defenders, Willie McDonald made two more first team league match appearances, a 4-2 win over Clyde and a 6-0 win over Dumbarton, plus a 4-1 win over Clyde in the Glasgow Cup (with Celtic then progressing to go on to win the Glasgow Cup in the final).

However, Thomas Dunbar was the preference for the place in the first team.

He left for Everton in December 1895.
