BiogJohn McGoldrick

A right-sided defender who stepped up from the Boy's Club in 1980 (David Moyes was also in that year's crop).

The already uneviable task of dislodging Danny McGrain from the team was not aided by a serious knee injury. He was then taken to Leeds United on a free transfer by Eddie Gray who also splashed a cool £161,000 on George McCluskey that summer.

Luckless John continued to struggle for fitness and made only limited appearances for 'the whites' who were then (as now) languishing in the lower reaches of the English hierarchy. And having found his path to the Celtic first team blocked by McGrain, McGoldrick joined Leeds just in time to witness the emergence of Irish stalwart Denis Irwin!

Duly moved on another free to Motherwell in July 1985 but packed in the game shortly afterwards, when a full recovery proved beyond him. Is believed to have then entered the family car business in Airdrie.
