BiogMcGregor, Alexander

Alexander McGregor signed for the Hoops from Clydebank Juniors in February 1914. He was said to be “fast, fairly clever and a good shot“.

He won his place after impressing in a trial match against Wigtownshire, so was then given his chance with the First Team proper.

The Renfrew-born outside right played his only competitive game in a 1-0 league defeat at Falkirk on February 28th. It was a notable game in that Celtic’s then record of clean sheets in matches was broken, having not conceded a goal till this game since 13 Dec 1913.

He soon after played in a friendly v Middlesborough on 21 Mar 1914, but wasn’t in the tour of Central Europe that summer (just before the war broke out).

It just wasn’t to be for Alec at Celtic.

He was loaned to both St Mirren and Dumbarton before signing with Clydebank in May 1916.
