BiogMcLaughlin, George - The Celtic Wiki

Forward George McLaughlan made just a solitary competitive appearance for Celtic.

Signed from Greenhead Thistle Juveniles in April 1923 his one game for the Hoops came in a 2-1 defeat to Partick at Celtic Park on September 1st. After this defeat, Tom White entered the changing rooms puffing on his cigar to boom out “No bonuses!“. Charming! It was actually Partick Thistle’s first ever victory over Celtic in the league, so George played in a little bit of unwanted history.

Part of the problem was that he was marked by some to become the “new Sandy McMahon“, but burdens like that often backfire on players. Too high a benchmark to live up to and he was never given a further chance to prove himself in the First Team, ending up playing in just that one league game.

After a number of loan spells, George McLaughlan joined Clydebank in March 1924, but moved on not long after.

He went on to win a Glasgow Cup medal against Celtic for Clyde in 1925. A shock result, as this was only Celtic’s second defeat so far in season 1925/26 and Clyde were in the second tier. A further measure to the achievement is that Celtic went on to win the league title that season, whilst Clyde did go on to win promotion coming second in the second tier. So major achievements for George McLaughlan & Clyde.

The Glasgow Cup victory was to be Clyde’s last Glasgow Cup title until 1946-47, it was also only their second ever Glasgow Cup title.

However, records indicate he didn’t stay long with Clyde after that incredible Glasgow Cup triumph, moving to Darlington sometime in 1925, and then onto Hull City (June 1926), Accrington Stanley (summer 1927) and then onto Nelson 1928.

He passed away prematurely at the age of 35 in 1939 [TBC].

Notes

  • A-Z of the Celts had his name as ‘McLauglan’ but elsewhere seen it as ‘McLaughlin’. Until otherwise we’ll retain the former but will amend if a source (i.e. a gravestone etc) or family member states should be the latter.
  • A biog of the player for Hull City claims he died prematurely in 1939  at the age of 35 (TBC).
