Jim Murphy was an inside left signed by Celtic in April 1921 from East Kilbride Thistle, and was seen as a neat tackler.

The Hamilton-born player made his Bhoys debut on September 23 1922 when Celtic defeated Dundee 1-0 in a league clash at Parkhead. It was a dream occasion for Frank Murphy who scored the only goal of the game in the dying minutes. He was then given a short run of games in the First Team.

However, he wasn’t given too many further opportunities, but as in his debut he again scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Alloa on 3 Mar 1923 in his last match.

Those were to be the highpoints of his Parkhead career, but they capped off a short but fair record. Celtic had won the league the season before, but not this season. He played in one match on the way to Celtic’s Scottish Cup triumph in 1923 (4-0 win over Hurlford) but that was in an early round. So left with no major silverware.

Celtic actually only lost the once in his seven matches he played in, a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen. The rest of the matches can be argued not to have not been against the top tier sides.

After loan spells at Clydebank and Ayr Utd he was transferred to permanently to Ayr Utd in the summer of 1924. He moved around and later had spells with Mid-Rohndda (summer 1925), Charlton Athletic (1926), Merthyr Town (1927), and finally Morton (1927). He appears to have hung up his playing boots in November 1929.

It wasn’t to be for Jim Murphy at Celtic, but a fair record to look back on.
