Biog

Former Campsie FC outside-right Michael Murray enjoyed a brief spell with Celtic reserves in 1890 before returning to the club in May 1892 from the short-lived reactionary Glasgow Hibernian.

He made his first team competitive debut in a 4-3 league victory over Renton at Parkhead on August 20th 1892.

He made just one further league appearance for the first team in a 3-2 victory a Abercorn in the league, before coincidentally joining Abercorn in August 1893.

Both of his appearances were in early games in the league campaign, and as Celtic went on to win the league that season for the first time, Michael Murray can look back with some pride at having been part of this great achievement that set the club up. As Celtic won the league by just the one point, then with two victories out of two in those games that Mick Murray played in, his contribution can be deemed to have been valuable (especially as the scorelines in both were so tight).

Some records state he may also have played two further games for Celtic in the local Glasgow Cup, with a victory over Partick Thistle and Pollokshaws, however the latter match was voided following a protest. He did play for Celtic in some friendlies over this period too, which were played on a short tour of North-East England.

He played against Celtic in a 4-2 victory for Abercorn on 11 Feb 1893. The Abercorn fans were going wild having won the game until Johnny Madden quipped: “The way you’re going on, you’d think you’d won the Cup!”. The mood apparently turned ugly, Johnny Campbell knocked a spectator’s tooth out and Jerry Reynolds was arrested for the same assault. Not known what Mick Murray did.

Mick Murray later became a successful publican in Lennoxtown & Kilsyth.

He passed away in 1925.
