Biog
Goalkeeper David Nicol signed for Celtic from Maryhill Hibernian in June 1927 as cover for Johnny Thomson, and was described as a “splendidly endowed ‘keeper of great promise“.
He had a good job outside of football and no particular desire to go senior until Celtic sought him out as cover for John Thomson, after John Thomson came out of the Glasgow Cup match v Third Lanark with “split fingers” and the referee got stoned in this game.
His only competitive first team appearance in the league for Celtic came on 29th September 1928 when aged just 21 he played away against Hamilton Academicals in a 1-1 league draw. John Thomson was an ever-present for practically the rest of the season.
David Nicol’s only other game was in a 6-5 (aet) victory over Queen’s Park in the Glasgow Charity Cup which saw Jimmy McGrory on fire with five goals. On the other hand for David Nicol, conceding five goals wasn’t likely to help his case for a future place with the first team.
His sole league match actually came during a poor run of form in the league for the first team. Celtic finished second that season way behind Rangers who admittedly had an exceptional record in the league with just the one defeat.
He would eventually sign on coincidentally for Hamilton Academicals from Celtic a year later, but an injury with Hamilton v Rangers is said to have prematurely ended his career.
Later, he ran the MacDonald Arms hotel in Balbeggie, and was coach to a local team in the Perth Amateur League.
