Celtic Career Review

A pint-sized winger in the old fashioned mould who emerged from Celtic Boy’s Club to sign an ‘x-form’ youth contract with the club in the summer of 1994. After winning a professional contract the following year and stepping up to the reserve team, he departed in 1998.

A season with Clyde in Division Two then beckoned for O’Brien, whereupon he was used mostly from the bench. The last diminutive winger picked up by Clyde after leaving Celtic was Pat Nevin, but seemingly O’Brien was unable to thrive in quite the same way. At the time, the “bully wee” had brought in a new manager from Maryhill Juniors and he brought with him no fewer than eleven players from the Junior circuit, creating conditions perhaps more suited to the talents of the burly Pat Keogh, than creative types like O’Brien.

Subsequently known to have enjoyed (endured?) a spell in the Ayrshire region Juniors, with Glenafton Athletic and Kello Rovers mentioned as clubs.
