Background

The little brother tournament to the main event of the European Cup, nevertheless the UEFA cup has a rich history and for Celtic was a proud moment for us when we reached the final in 2003 ("The Road to Seville") after overcoming some fine opponents.

Being very much in the shadows of the more illustrious European Cup, in 2009-10 the tournament was revamped to create the Europa League set-up (modelled on the Champions League).

Celtic were the first Scottish qualifiers to the "new" competition (having been knocked out the of European Cup by Arsenal in the qualifying round for the Champions League).
