Biog
Originally signed on loan from Hamilton Academicals in January 1902, Jimmy Walls was the latest in a long line of candidates the Bhoys hoped would fill the gap left by Neill McCallum almost a decade earlier.
Jimmy Walls made his debut in a 3-0 home Scottish Cup triumph on 11 January 1902 as Celtic defeated Thornliebank. His debut came just one week after the end of the league season with Celtic losing to Rangers in the final league game that effectively won Rangers the title (season 1901/02).
Celtic did go on to make the Scottish Cup final, but James Walls did not play in any further Scottish Cup matches, and in any case Celtic lost to Hibernian on the final day (Hibs’ only Scottish Cup title in the 20th century).
He signed for the club on a full time basis later that year in May but in total made only 5 first team appearances in the league & Scottish Cup before losing his place to Jimmy Muir.
His league matches came in season 1902/03, playing v Kilmarnock in November 1902 but then waiting until March 1903 for three league match appearances in one run (v Port Glasgow Athletic, Morton and Dundee). His last match was in a 2-0 defeat to Dundee, his only defeat with Celtic. He had played in the last 3 league matches of the season as Celtic wrapped up what was a disappointing title challenge, finishing fifth and 11pts behind title winners Hibernian.
He did get to play in a run in the post-season Inter-City League matches (with Celtic finishing second bottom out of the nine sides in the table!), but once Bobby Muir was brought in, it was the end of the road for James Walls at Celtic.
He moved to Ayr United in August 1903, and later had spells at Johnstone FC, Beith FC and then Morton.
