Overview
Celtic were approached early in the 1985 – 1986 season to send a team to compete in an Under-20 age group Tournament to be played in Zurich at the end of the 85/86 season. This Tournament had been held annually since 1939 and continues to be held.
This was played during a period when the Under-20 age group was being promoted by FIFA as a defining group and a way to promote football world-wide. During the 80’s there was a FIFA initiative which started the World Under-20 Championships in the late 1980’s.
Celtic sent a young squad which went on to win the tournament after 4 games.
Format
16 teams were split into 4 groups of 4. The Winners of each group then contested a semi-final, the winners going onto the Final
The games were held outdoors, the format being 2 halves of 15 or 20 minutes
