Biog
Edinburgh-born Marc Anthony was a product of Celtic Boys Club and he signed professional terms with the Bhoys in Summer 1995. He had already made the bench for the first team, aged 16, during the Hampden season for a league match vs. Hibernian.
Marc was an S-Form signing from Edinburgh who had been playing for Celtic Boys Club U16. He signed on as pro at the start of the 1995/96 season becoming a prolific scorer with the U18’s before stepping up to the Reserves. He came on as a sub in Mick McCarthy’s Testimonial at the end of 95/96.
He got his first team debut as a sub against Clyde in 1996/97 and was capped for Scotland at U21 level. He then made two further appearances in the league for Celtic, in a 3-1 win over Kilmarnock and then a 5-1 win over Dunfermline.
Frustaratingly, he required a hernia operation in November 1996 and this kept him out of contention for a while, and from there on in he was mostly out the picture and didn’t again play for the first team.
He started 1997/98 out of contract signing month-to-month deals before going on loan to Tranmere for the second half of season. He didn’t get much chance at Tranmere either much to his annoyance. Again through 1998/99 he continued to sign month-to-month deals before going on loan to Clydebank.
With a short and stocky physique Anthony played mostly as a forward at Parkhead but was also capable of dropping back into midfield. However, at a Celtic in the doldrums with Rangers gunning for nine in a row in 1996-96, experiments and prospects were not priority, especially as Celtic had just the foreign high-cost Three Amigos. Next season with Wim Jansen could have been a fresh start for all, but Jansen didn’t seem to give youth much opportunity.
Marc Anthony made a total of three substitute appearances for the Bhoys in Tommy Burns’ last season as boss (1996/97), with Celtic winning all three matches, and will be a worthy note for Marc Anthony to look back upon.
Post-Celtic
He left Celtic in summer 1999 to join Berwick Rangers on a free transfer and was used as a midfielder there. Out of contract at the end of season 2001/02 he moved on to Forfar for season 2002/03 and rejected a new deal at the end of that season. He was linked to Albion Rovers but no movement to Cliftonhill was seen.
He then played Junior football first with Linlithgow Rose and laterly Bo’ness Utd.
He re-emerged in the Western Australian state league with ECU Joondalup (2007) and Stirling Lions (2008) where his impressive performances earned him an unlikely crack at the ‘big time’ with A-League outfit Perth Glory, but then unwinding with another Aussie Side Cockburn City.
