BiogConvery, John - The Celtic Wiki

From Portferry, Co. Down John Convery was spotted by scouts in Ireland and was signed from Glenavon on around his 17th birthday and went straight into the Youth team and Reserves. He was initially given a 2 year contract.

He proved to be a hard working defender and gradually worked his way through the teams till his first knee injury occurred in July 1998. This kept him out for 2 months. He returned and recaptured his form but finished the season further away from a first team start.

Season 1999/00 saw him progress to be a regular member of the Reserve side before making his first team debut as a sub in the Dundee Utd game at the end of the season when Dalglish tried out a number of younger players.

Celtic were abject in season 1999/00, but as the new team management came in under Martin O’Neill for season 2000/01, money was spent heavily on bringing in big names. That was to mean that youngsters and reserves were to be mostly sidelined as Celtic were desperate to turn things around with experience needed. Celtic turned a corner and won a treble against all expectations, but John Convery and his young peers were most often left on the sidelines to watch.

In 2001/02 a further serious knee injury kept him sidelined for 6 months. He eventually made a comeback and went to Falkirk on loan from February 2002 to the end of the season. Out of contract at the end of the season he was released and returned to Northern Ireland to join Portadown, whom he captained for many years until switching to Newry City in 2010, and then finally to Cliftonville and Glenavon to rundown his senior playing career.

John Convery played for Northern Ireland at U18 and U21 level.

It just wasn’t to be for John Convery at Celtic, but we wished him the best.
