BiogAndrew Davidson

Left-half Andrew Davidson was signed by Celtic in April 1913 from Rutherglen Glencairn.

A medical student at Glasgow University, Andrew Davidson made his debut in a 1-0 league victory at Clyde on a snowy January 5th 1914 and made a noteworthy contribution during the rest of that double winning season with some fine performances in what were to be just a handful of First XI chances in Jan & Feb 2014.

He was however to be no more than cover for Jim Young and Jim McMaster, so in May 1914 he was allowed to leave for St Mirren.

In his time at the club, Celtic only lost in one match he had played in (a 1-0 defeat to Falkirk which was was to be his last match), and was also the only match in which Celtic conceded in. It was actually the end of Charlie Shaw’s then UK record of clean sheets for first team action, so notable in many ways.

In total, Celtic won five of the six games he played in, scoring 14 goals conceding just the one. An excellent short run of games to play in for Andrew Davidson, which helped Celtic to the league title for season 1913/14 and earned him a deserved league medal.

Post-Celtic
Wartime was beginning. Davidson qualified as a doctor in 1916 and during the Great War became Captain Davidson RAMC.

He won the incredible honour to be the chief medical officer to the Dept of Health for Scotland from 1941-54. A difficult time to be given that great responsibility.

In 1946, he had the personal honour to be knighted, Sir Andrew Davidson, and he was also to be the honorary physician to the then King of Britain.

He passed away in 1962. A wonderful intelligent man who served his people and countrymen well, and had a great Celtic record too.
