Biog

Carronshore born Cornelius Ferguson made two senior appearances as a Celt in the wartime Regional League set-up.

The hard-tackling left-half joined the Bhoys on loan from Alloa (Willie McStay’s old club), in the likely hope that he could help the side recover after a disastrous past season that saw Celtic finish 13th in the truncated West Regional League, winning just 24pts, half that of Rangers who won the title. Celtic lost 16 games that season.

He made his debut in the opening day league match in season 1940-41, a 2-2 draw at Hamilton Academicals in August 1940.

He seemed to be a welcome capture as he was described to have a great footballing ability:

“I have never seen a wing-half coming out so often with the ball after a tackle than Neilly Ferguson“.

His only other game was a 2-0 defeat a week later to Morton away, and Joseph McCulloch was preferred in his place thereafter, although that didn’t last long, and in the second half of the season Milne was given the same role all three played in.

His brief spell at Parkhead came to an end when he joined the RAF in 1941.

He returned to Alloa after the war, and then later retired to concentrate on his business as a grate-builder.
