BiogPatrick Gilgun

Centre-forward Paddy Gilgun (a “promising youngster“) was signed by Celtic in January 1924 from Law Scotia. He was said to be a thrustful type who liked to run at defences and possessed a powerful drive.

A robust but at times ponderous forward he played just three times for the Celtic first team, making his debut in a 2-1 home league defeat to Clydebank on 4th March 1924, a match which saw Jimmy McGrory return to Celtic Park but for Clydebank on loan and score for his loan side.

Paddy Gilgun played his next two games soon after, but Celtic lost first to Falkirk 3-1 and then drew with Hibernian 1-1. Celtic were losing a number of games around this time in the final quarter of this season (1923-24).

If Celtic were to not help his case, then Patrick Gilgun seems to have had to take it into his own hands to turn things around for his own record at least. He scored a goal for Celtic in the 1-1 draw with Hibs, the final league game of the season, but Celtic still finished far behind league title winners Rangers that season.

He had made a total of three Celtic appearances – scoring just that once – before joining Brighton and Hove Albion in 1925.
