Biog

James McGinn stayed less than a year with Celtic after signing for the Bhoys in September 1893.

An inside-left, the player’s competitive Celtic debut came in a thrilling 4-2 league victory at Hearts on 9th September 1893.

His second – and final – league appearance was also in Edinburgh but this time Celtic (now the recently crowned league champions) were thrashed 5-0 by Leith Athletic on 17th March 1894. It was the last league game of the season, so possibly his place was given as a further trial appearance. Leith Athletic finished second bottom of the top tier that season, so a surprise result especially as Leith Athletic had conceded the most goals at home that season to the rest of the league sides.

His first match appearance had a great & material impact on the final league standing, as Hearts were runners-up to Celtic by 3pts. St Bernards were third above Rangers. Hibs won the second tier.

On 25th August 1894, James McGinn left Celtic for Airdrie in the hope of regular first team football.

He passed away in 1932.
