Biog
Former Scotland international Patrick Murray was brought to Celtic in November 1902 as the Bhoys sought a talent to fill the problematic outside-right slot, as Alex Crawford was deemed not up to standard with others tried out in the role before Paddy Murray arrived. In the mid-1890s at Hibs he was described as “a brilliant exponent“, but he never played against Celtic for Hibernian when there during the 1895/96 season when Celtic won the league title for the third time.
Paddy Murray – who was to sign from Nottingham Forest – scored on his debut on 15th November 1902 as Celtic defeated Partick Thistle 4-2 in a league tie at Parkhead.
From thereon he had a long run in the first team. However, and despite a bright start with a 3-0 victory next over Port Glasgow, his run thereafter mostly consisted of defeat and draws. He scored in a 4-0 win over St Mirren in the cup, which was a relief after the two sides had gone through two drawn matches for this second replay, but Celtic then lost 3-0 to Rangers in the next round.
His last game was a 2-0 defeat to Dundee away in the league, and into the next season Robert Muir appears to have been preferred for the same role in the team.
It was a poor season for Celtic who ended it empty handed.
The former Hibernian and Preston North End man had made a total of 16 league & Scottish Cup appearances and scored three goals before moving to Portsmouth in 1903.
An interesting note on Patrick Murray is the number of clubs he played with, he just didn’t seem to settle anywhere or possibly he just liked to move around, numbering around 14 stints across a number of clubs in his career across the tiers in England & Scotland. So maybe his short stint at Celtic was just as expected from his history. He ended his time in first team football at Royal Albert, his third stint at the club.
He passed away in 1925.

- There were two players with the same name who played for Hibernian at this same time. Both are of the same age, the other one won caps for Scotland and was a stalwart at Hibernian who helped to establish their club.
