Biog
Outside-right James Young played one game as a Celt while on loan from Lochgelly United having just completed a short loan at Kilmarnock where he scored a goal in his two league appearances there.
He filled in for Andy McAtee, and had a steady match against Hearts at Parkhead as the Bhoys ran out 3-0 victors on 9th February 1918:
“He did a lot of clever things… he was hampered by the ground conditions… and did nothing brilliant”.
However Celtic were unwilling to meet Lochgelly’s £250 asking price for the player.
Incredibly, James Young went on to sign for title rivals Rangers practically as soon as he had left Celtic, but he failed to live up to the expectations his performances as a junior player had established:
“[James Young lacked] the necessary football skill to accompany his fine physique”.
He managed to play four league games in season 1917/18 for Rangers, his first match was a 3-0 win on 16th February 1918, just a week after his single Celtic game. He had a fair record at Ibrox with two wins, one draw and one defeat over February-March 1918 as Rangers went on to finally take the title from Celtic who had dominated the league over the war time period, so played his part in helping Rangers win the title.
Whilst at Rangers, he played for them in the War Fund Shield semi-finals v Morton on 27 April 1918. He grabbed a goal for Rangers when they were 3-0 down, but apparently instead of grabbing the ball and dashing back up the park to go for another, young Jim Young set off on a trek for handshakes.
It appears that he didn’t play in the War Fund Shield final, which Celtic won 1-0.
He later moved onto Dumbarton, and again played few times for that club too, with a poor record of four defeats and no goals in five league matches in his time there in season 1919-20. Interestingly, soon after his last match at Dumbarton (1-0 defeat to Hibernian on 8 Feb 1919), his manager James Collins was replaced by ex-Celt George Livingstone in March 1919 who is said to have been the one to have taken him to Dumbarton (according to the book “An Alphabet of the Celts”). Both James Young & George Livingstone are players amongst that select group to have played for both Celtic & Rangers, but James Young never played under George Livingstone at Dumbarton when the latter was manager.
George Livingstone only lasted a season as manager at Dumbarton and was replaced by an up & coming new manager, ex-Celt Paddy Travers.

Notes
- Birth date of 1 arch 1891 as has been stated in a few places needs to be double-check, as would mean he was a very late starter in football (not impossible) but highly unusual even for that era.
- Can’t as yet find a picture of him, checked a team/squad pic of Rangers in 1918/19 (with help of Rangers historian), but not listed.
