The Scotsman – Monday, 28th December 1891, page 4

Celtic v St Mirren – At Parkhead in favourable weather and before about 2000 spectators. The Saints were without two of their regular eleven, and the Celtic were minus Dowds and Maley. The home team started with the wind, and immediately pressed. The Saints passed well, and got within range of Duff. Then the Celtic almost succeeded in getting the leather through at the other end. Paisley were having more than their share of defensive work, and saved under the bar wonderfully. On ten minutes Campbell got through the first goal for the Celtic. The forward play on each side was splendid. In twenty minutes the Saints cleverly equalised. The Celtic were temporarily without Kelly, but they managed to resume pressure, but found a stubborn defence opposed to them. The Paisley representatives were showing up surprisingly against the wind. The inaccurate shooting of the Celtic helped them. Half-time:- Celtic, one goal; Saints, one goal. After a brief interval the teams resumed, the Celtic being still without Kelly. The Celtic had the first try, and opened splendidly with ten men. The Saints, however, put in a turn of pressure. Then the Celtic scored, but off-side was given and the Saints again took up the running, and were in turn driven back. It was an interesting game, although the pace slackened somewhat. A bad collision between McFarlane and Madden stopped the game for a few minutes. The Celtic came near scoring several times. After the resumption both ends were visited, but the final effort failed. Brady gave the Celtic the lead fifteen minutes before the finish. This success added spirit to the play, and the Saints made efforts again to pull level. The Saints perceptibly fell away towards the finish, but they spurted again on the call of time. Result:- Celtic, two goals; Saints, one goal.
