- On the Wednesday night the Scottish League played the English League in Newcastle winning 3-1. Gemmell, Johnstone, McBride and Hughes played. Hughes had picked up a knock against St Johnstone but recovered enough to play. However the injury caught up with him and he failed to make this game. Also out was Bobby Murdoch for the first time this season. In came Jim Brogan for him. Billy McNeill went back to centre half with Jim Craig back fit and John Cushley dropping out. Bobby Lennox came in at inside left with Bertie Auld going back on the left wing and McBride reverting to his inside right position – quite a bit of chopping around!.
- Celtic were drawn against Liverpool in the semi final of the Cup Winners Cup. Liverpool were topping Division 1 south of the border. Jim Craig would be suspended for the first leg having been sent off in Tbilisi. Also, Hampden Park was chosen to host the final of the Cup Winners Cup – so an added incentive for Celtic to beat Liverpool.
- Hamilton had come up from Division 2 at the start of the season and looked like a straight drop back down to Division 2. They were rock bottom of the league.
- On the previous night Celtic defeated Hamilton Academicals 2-0 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Martin, Halpin, McCarron, Cattanach, Cushley, Hay, Connelly, H. Quinn, J. Quinn, Sweeney, Taylor. The Celtic scorers were J. Quinn and H. Quinn.
- On the same day Celtic lost 3-0 to Airdrie in a Combined Reserve League match at Broomfield. The Celtic team was Kennedy, Young, Halpin, Henderson, McCarron, O'Neill, Cunningham, Connelly, J. Quinn, Sweeney, McGowan.
