THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB

Celtic is a Club like no other. Its story is a unique one, of a football Club founded to raise money to help alleviate poverty within the predominantly Irish immigrant community of Glasgow’s East End. Yet, from its inception, Celtic has been a Club open to all. From those humble and charitable origins, Celtic have gone on to become one of the most famous names in world football. In 1967, they became the first British Club to win the European Cup, while domestically they have won, to date, 44 Scottish League titles, 36 Scottish Cups and 14 League Cups. And in the Club’s 125th anniversary year, manager Neil Lennon led the team to a league and Scottish Cup double. The story of Celtic continues – of success on the field, backed by a strong organisation off it, and all underpinned by a commitment to remain true to the charitable roots of the Club. This is just the latest chapter…

The Official History of Celtic Football Club brings the story of a unique sporting institution right up to date as the club has celebrated the 125th anniversary of its foundation. Celtic was formed on November 6, 1887 and one hundred and twenty-five years later, confirmed its position as the top Club in Scotland by winning the Scottish Premier League title and the Scottish Cup. It was a fitting way to mark an important milestone in the ongoing story of the Celtic.

The author, Celtic Director, Brian Wilson, previously wrote the highly-regarded best-seller ‘Celtic: A Century with Honour’ to mark the club’s centenary in 1988, and now he brings the story right-up-to-date in this new and important Celtic book.

He looks back at the lean years following the Centenary double success, he examines the dramatic battle for Celtic’s survival and the timely and successful takeover by Fergus McCann, and he charts the progress of the Club since then, both on and off the field, telling the story with unparalleled access to the key figures involved as well as the Club’s own records.

The Official History of Celtic Football Club explains how a Club inspired by Marist Brother Walfrid in order to raise money to feed the poor grew to become one of the most famous organisations in world football. Throughout its history, the Club’s roots have remained in the east end of Glasgow, even as the Club’s success expanded beyond Scottish shores and also as Celtic supporters ensured that Celtic Park enjoys an impressive and enviable reputation throughout football.

Celtic supporters sing of ‘knowing the history’, because it is a unique history that they are rightly proud of, and one which they are an integral part of. This book celebrates, in the words of the legendary Billy McNeill, ‘the fairy-tale’ that is Celtic Football Club.
