Trivia

  • Celtic made what amounted to a series of baffling Kelly-esque team changes. Kelly favourite Sean Fallon was fit again and preferred at centre forward to John McPhail who moved out one to inside left. Bobby Collins was out and Jimmy Walsh moved to inside left. There was no hint that Bobby Collins was injured. The rumour doing the rounds (and repeated in Eugene MacBride's 'Alphabet of the Celts') was that Collins had been dropped on Kelly's orders for too strong a challenge on the Clyde goalkeeper Ken Hewkins in the first game.
  • The replay was a Wednesday 6:30 PM kick off. After a long period of dry weather – one of the reasons given for the dullness of the football on the Saturday game ! – rain fell steadily from early morning on the day of the replay. Even so the sprinklers had been turned on the Hampden turf – an unuasual sight at a football pitch in Scotland in the 50's.
  • Elsewhere Airdrieonians won the Division B Championship and promotion to Division A next season.

Review

Clyde won the Cup for the second time in their history. The quality of play on Clyde's part was tremendously improved from the previous Saturday and they deservedly won the cup though they withstood a tremendous barrage in the final five minutes during which a magnificent save by Hewkins from John McPhail header from a Tully lob prevented Celtic equalising. Walsh and Tully were Celtic's best forwards but received scant service.
The rejigged Celtic forward line up worked as well as a broken leg (as the Evening Times put it).
