Trivia

  • Jim Conway makes his debut. McPhail was out with a knee injury and in his place came 17 year old Jim Conway, having just signed his senior contract with Celtic.
  • There was a degree of boycott from the Celtic Supporters Association of this Falkirk away game, the reason being given was the uproar after the visit to Falkirk in 1955 when there had been glass throwing, disturbances on the terraces and Rae sent to the stands after an incident involving Tully. The Supporters still felt that there was little case to answer from the Celtic fans and as such any Falkirk away game was treated as circumspect.
  • John Higgins was still resting and recuperating from the knee trouble which had so far kept him out of the side. The treatment involved "…long country walks".
  • Rangers played St Etienne in the first round of the European Cup at Ibrox on the Wednesday 4th September winning 3-1.
  • Outside of football, plans were announced for the building of a £5million oil refinery at Grangemouth on the Forth; The Wolfenden Report recommended a relaxation on the anti-homosexual laws where the individuals concerned were consenting adults.

Review

The game was played at a hectic pace with Falkirk giving as good as they got. They appealed for a penalty from a Peacock challenge in the area. On the half hour Auld was booked for a foul on Parker. Just on half time Fernie picked the ball on and after embarking on one of his mazy wonders released a shot which beat Slater for the first goal. Falkirk came out determined to level but it was Celtic that came closest to scoring when a Collins shot skimmed the post. Beattie was called into action several times in the second half to keep the bhoys in front but it was a nervy finish.
