  • The first sign that Jock Stein had totally transformed the Celtic team.
  • Celtic players wore flat soled German Adidas branded training shoes which gave them a better footing on the day.
  • Steve Chalmers scored a rare Celtic hat trick against Rangers.
  • Despite the trouble that had erupted after the League Cup Final, and the precautions that were taken with this game, there were no arrests inside the ground before, during or after the game.

Review

Rangers took an early lead through Wilson with a pass that appeared to take a deflection but which he accepted and hooked past Simpson. At half time they still led despite constant Celtic pressure.
In the second half Celtic ran riot and could have scored more than five. Chalmers was top man with three but Murdoch's was the goal of the game with a thrashing shot after referee Wharton had delightfully let the ball run through his legs. As they fought to keep the score down Rangers had three men booked – Provan, Johansen and Setterington

Celtic sent a message out that day that Stein's team were now mature and ready to take on all comers at home and abroad. Despite the absence of captain Billy McNeill Celtic looked solid and John Cushley was an able deputy. This result put Celtic at the top of the table two points ahead of Rangers with a game in hand.
