Trivia

  • Crowd of 72,000 was a record for a midweek game at Parkhead.
  • Back in came a fit-again Jim Craig at right back allowing McNeill to move back to centre half and Cushley, who had performed poorly against Wallace now on two occasions, to drop out. In too came Charlie Gallacher for Bertie Auld.
  • Good news comes through as Falkirk beat Rangers 3-2 at Brockville in the League. Close rival Dunfermiline and Kilmarnock also lost in the League this night.
  • Murdoch, Gemmell, Johnstone and Hughes were selected for the Scottish League to face the English League at Newcastle with McBride named as a travelling reserve.
  • The draw was made for the semi final with Celtic due to face Dunfermiline (in a hot ball / cold ball scenario) at Hampden.

Review

Unlike the first game, Celtic controlled this replay from the start. Jock Stein had identified Shevlane as the weak link in the Hearts defense and prodded at him all the time. Jimmy Johnstone had a terrific game and scored the first goal finishing off a neat move that was worked through Gemmell, Gallacher and McBride before Jinky danced around a defender and shot home. Just about on the half hour Mudoch received a clever chip forward from Gemmell and fired home to put Celtic 2-0 up at the interval.
Five minutes after the restart Celtic had the tie in the bag when Chalmers broke away and ran virtually the length of the Hearts half before shooting home decisively. Wallace pulled one back for Hearts seven minutes from time but it was too little too late.
