Trivia

  • A disappointed Celtic party returned to Glasgow on the overnight train after the narrow defeat of 2-1 on aggregate by Liverpool in the European Cup Winners Cup. Said Jock Stein, "The past is over and done with. Our job now is to prepare for the Cup Final."
  • If required the game would be replayed at Hampden on following Wednesday.
  • Both Bobby Lennox and Bertie Auld had picked up knocks in the Liverpool game and neither made the Cup Final. Jimmy Johnstone came back in and Charlie Gallacher at inside left. Even if fit, Auld would have been suspended having picked up a seven day suspension from the SFA referees Committee for three cautions in previous matches.
  • Incredible attendance of 126,599 turn out.

Review

1966-04-23: Rangers 0-0 Celtic, Scottish Cup - The Celtic Wiki

This was a hard fought, typical Old Firm Scottish cup affair. Tight and on tenterhooks throughout with the knowledge that one slip could let the opposition through for an advantage. Rangers won the toss and Celtic played against the wind in the first half.
Celtic's best performance was at the start of the second half when only Ritchie in goal and the organising strength of Greig kept the Rangers side together and the match goalless.

Celtic possibly edged it and came closest when McNeill hit the Rangers bar with a thudding header.

The best players on the field were central defenders Greig and McKinnon of Rangers and McNeill and Clark of Celtic.
