Trivia

  • Jimmy Johnstone was ioncluded in the squad for the game having served his suspension following the incident at the end of the Queen's Park Scottish Cup tie. He came back in on the right wing. Also fit again was Jim Craig and he returned as right back.
  • This was a Monday night game and the game in hand that Celtic had to play.
  • In the European Cup, Celtic were drawn against Dukla Prague in the semi finals with the first leg at home. This was a tough draw, one that had not been desired, but having been made the management and Board got on with preparations for what would be a hard semi final against the Czech Army side.
  • Celtic now depose Rangers at the top of the league by two points after this result. Rangers themselves were away in Spain to play the second leg of their Cup Winners Cup quarter final against Real Zaragoza. Rangers went through on the toss of a coin the match finishing 2-0 to Real Zaragoza and 2-2 on aggregate. Scotland now had two representatives in the semi finals of the main two European tournaments

Outside of football the supertanker Torrey Canyon went aground on the Seven Stones reef off Cornwall spilling hundreds of tons of oil into the water and polluting the whole of the south west of England's coastline.

Review

Celtic went top of the league with an easy 5-0 win over Falkirk, who appeared to have little to counter the ease, skill, fitness and poise of Celtic. Falkirk attempted to play a defensive game and were poor when they tried to attack, eassily snuffed out by McNeill and Clark and the full backs. Steve Chalmers opened the scoring with a hammered goal on 25 minutes and Bertie Auld added a second five minutes later. 2-0 up at half time the same continued in the second half. John Hughes added another rocket from 30 yards out. A minute later Tommy Gemmell added from the penalty spot after Jimmy Johnstone was brought down in the area. And Steve Chalmers got his second with a quarter of an hour to play. 5-0 up with little response from Falkirk, Celtic took their foot off the peddle somewhat.
