Trivia

  • Celtic fans leave Hampden singing joyously and not only because they won the Glasgow Cup in style.
  • Celtic were allowed a bye into the final as Rangers had withdrawn from the tournament at the semi stage stating that they had too many commitments with League, Scottish Cup and European Fairs Cup to contend with (though by this time they were out of the Scottish Cup, had lost the League Cup and had been pumped out of the Fairs Cup by Leeds Utd.). As it happens they received criticism of being afraid to face an in-form Celtic.
  • In the League Rangers were now saying that if two teams finished level on points at the top then the League should be decided by a play-off and not by the goal average method which had been used all the way till now. Funny that! Can’t think why.
  • Ronnie Simpson had injured an arm during the game against Dundee. However he had not reported in for treatment on the Monday when the players were given a day off so he played and the same side again played together.
  • On the same day, at Celtic Park, Celtic Reserves defeated Raith Rovers Reserves 2-1. The Celtic scorers were Quinn and McMahon. The Celtic team was Fallon, Murray, Shevlane, Cattanach, Young, Hay, Taggart, Newman, Quinn, McMahon, Gorman. Sub Newman (Cattanach).

Review

Celtic ran amok at Hampden but all the attention of the Celtic fans was on radios listening to Morton against Rangers at Cappielow in the league.

Morton were sensationally 3-1 up although Rangers got back to 3-3. However the result gave Celtic the advantage in the title race as they had a much better goal difference. If Celtic won their last two games (Morton (H); Dunfermline (A)) then Celtic would win the title and three-in-a-row.

Jock Stein, quoted in the Evening Times had this to say:-
“We gave the fans good value for their money. We set out to entertain and we did that. What I liked best of all was the different variety in the play, a variety that was refreshing and exciting at the same time.
“Clyde played well and they took the defeat in a sporting fashion.
“It was a great night for us but we know that the League is not yet won.We have said for months that the struggle with Rangers wiould go on till the last kick of the season – and probably to the last game.
“We are in the driver’s seat now, because at the beginning of the year we had a conference and decided that the flag would be won or lost by our own efforts against every team we played in the coming months. We also decided that we would have to go for goals in case it came to a goal average count.
“That we are now at the top is a great credit to our staff. They deserve their praise because we have been missing three kjey players for a lot of the time – Bertie Auld, Steve Chalmers and John Clark. I think it shows the strength of the pool especially if you consider that we have played some of out best football in that time and scored goals at a faster rate than any other time during the season.
