Trivia

  • This was one of the games Celtic agreed to play in the gap between the end of the 1967-68 season and leaving for the tour of USA, Canada and Mexico. Celtic had been approached to provide the opposition for Jimmy McKinnnell's Testimonial at Dumfries. Jock Stein readily agreed and said he would bring the Lisbon Lions team.
  • Jimmy McKinnell had been secretary and Manager at the Dumfries club since 1946, resigning as manager in 1961 and secretary in 1968. The Dumfries side arranged this game to pay tribute to a faithful club servant.
  • The Queen of the South Select side was composed of some of the players of the Dumfries side, ex-players and invitees from other clubs in Scotland.
  • Ex Celt Mike Jackson was a sub for Queens.
  • England beat Spain 2-1 in Madrid in the quarter finals of the 1968 European Championships.
