Review

1 June 1968 Cup of Champions – NEC Toronto. Under strength Celtic side minus Craig (left at home with a new dental practise), Gemmell (injured and sent home), Johnstone (allowed to remain in Scotland due to 'domestic' issues) and Auld (left in Scotland to recover from cartilage surgery) have a prestige victory over Italian giants AC Milan.

Celtic's attacking football brought back memories of Lisbon in 1967. In 47 minutes Lennox scored after Belli failed to hold a Wallace shot. In 64 minutes Celtic scored a great goal when Hughes ran 60 yards before passing to Gallagher who calmly scored. Hughes had earlier been booked after a tussle with a number of the Italians.

Lennox had scored early on but the Swiss referee had disallowed the goal for obstruction on the Milan keeper. In 20 minutes Lennox should have had a penalty when Schnellinger brought him down. They were refused another penalty later when Maldini clearly handled Wallace's shot.
