1970-08-10: Celtic 3-1 Rangers, Glasgow Cup Final

Trivia

  • Season 1969-70 Glasgow Cup Final.
  • No space in the fixture list could be found at the end of the previous season to play this game and it was decided to postpone it to now. Played at Hampden.
  • Jock Stein only made one announcement pre-game and that was that Evan Williams would start in goal. John Fallon had been set to continue but the sudden death of his brother saw him committed to family matters.
  • Billy McNeill was rested as was Brogan, Johnstone, Lennox, Hood and Hughes – very much a second choice team in terms of position and mix – who had all played in the season opener against Hearts in the League Cup. Bobby Murdoch captained the side.
  • It was clear that Willie Waddell the new Rangers manager wanted to win this one and they fielded a strong side.

Review1970 GCF ticket Celtic v Rangers

At Hampden Park attendance 58,144Celtic fielded, in essence, a second string team and won convincingly against Rangers’ first eleven. Stein left out McNeill, Brogan, Clark, Johnstone, Hood, Lennox, Hughes, Chalmers and Auld from the team and still won with ease.

There was a considerable gap between the sides and Celtic let up long before the end.

Connelly got the plaudits for a masterful display at centre back with strong defending and magnificent long range passing from defence. Connelly was placed behind twin markers Cattenach and Hay and the new formation was an outstanding success.

Quinn’s goal was reminiscent of Lennox, a speedy burst through the Rangers’ defence and a strong finish.

Great story from George Connelly’s autobiography
They decided they were gonna do Alex MacDonald during a game v Rangers as he was always a dirty bastard against them. The chance came and Cattenach caught up with him around the throat with his boot as Macdonald bent down to header a ball. MacDonald got carried off and Cattenach gets away with it.
They go in at half time, dressing room cock a hoop at getting rid of MacDonald. Stein comes in and goes mental at Cattenach: “If you ever make another tackle like that again it will be the last time you wear the hoops!”.
Dressing room falls silent and all the players have their heads down as Stein goes for it.
“I was walking towards the door to go out for the second half chastened with my head down ” said Davie Cattenach.
“Next thing is I felt an arm going round my shoulder, I look round and it’s Sean Fallon.
“Sean Fallon whispers in my ear: “Son, that’s the greatest tackle I ever seen in my life!””.
