Trivia

  • First leg quarter final tie on the Wednesday night at Celtic Park following the Monday night replay against Motherwell to settle the previous round.
  • Stein was convinced that the team needed mixing up and a shake-up, despite decent performances against Motherwell and Hibs – the major issues being a lack of scoring up front and at times a fragility at the back. The team was still powering over opponents but there was a spark missing in individual performances that the Big Man could see and wanted to get back.
  • Back in came Billy McNeill at centre half (Roddy MacDonald was out anyway with a groin strain) and Davie Hay up front. Harry Hood started instead of Jimmy Johnstone.
  • Billy McNeill is given a rousing cheer by the support on his return to the team.

Striking Glasgow firemen are permitted to take bucket collections outside Celtic Park.

Review

Parkhead fans are privileged to see another cracking cup tie.
Despite an early score for the Dandies it was Kenny Dalglish who set the match on it's toes and Aberdeen onto the back foot with two goals in two minutes early in the match. It took till the second half for Aberdeen to get the heid back after such a crushing blow. Aberdeen then equalised only for McCluskey to hit right back for Celtic.
After that the game became if anything quicker with both sides having chances.

A cracking game! Aberdeen were so far undefeated away from home and it set up a tough game for the second leg back at Pittodrie.

Pat McCluskey is the unlikely hero with the winning goal, a glorious low shot from 25 yards.

Dalglish scored two great goals the first he slotted through Clark's legs when clear on goal and the second an instinctive left foot shot on the turn from the edge of the area.
