Trivia

  • Edvaldsson and McCluskey both took knocks in the previous game against Dundee Utd. McCluskey recovered sufficiently but Edvaldsson only made the bench.
  • Celtic fans look on in dismay as the team buckles against Rangers on a hot summer’s afternon and go down tamely.
  • Jardine and Cooper’s goals were tremendous efforts but were disappointing from a Celtic perspective: Jardine running from his sweeper role in his own half for 50 yards before shooting past Latchford. Cooper’s goal was a fine individual effort with Celtic defenders lacking concentration.
  • Lennox gave the score some respect after coming on as a substitute for McCluskey.
  • Manager McNeill couldn’t hide his anger after match but did say that Celtic would be prepared for the competitive matches coming up.

Review

1979 DCF Celtic v Rangers

This game is best remembered for Davie Cooper’s fine individual goal when he beat several Celtic players in the area and tucked the ball past Latchford.

Celtic played reasonably well but were timid in attack.
Celtic made the early running with Rangers content to soak up the pressure. But then Rangers young winger John MacDonald wortked a 1-2 with Cooper and Latchford had no chance with the shot. Ten minutes later and the Bhoys were two down after a superb solo goal from Jardine who took the ball from the Rangers penalty area all the way into the Celtic area before blasting a shot past Latchford. Rangers then had Cooper and Parlane booked before the half time whistle.
In the second half Aitken urged the Celtic players on to greater efforts but it was Rangers that seemed the classier of the two teams. Doyle was booked followed by McAdam to even up the booking score. Bobby Lennox came on for Celtic and Derek Johnstone for Rangers.
Davie Cooper then scored anothewr superb individual goal before Bobby Lennox pulled one back for Celtic.

It’s true to say that Celtic were overpowered on the day.
