Larsson makes trip worthwhile

The Herald 15/01/1999

Xerez ....................... 0
Celtic .......................1
CELTIC made the two-and-a-half-hour journey into Spain's sherry territory worthwhile with a victory over an industrious third division side whose pitch was a big improvement on the one in La Linea on Wednesday.
The game also was a lot calmer, but competitive enough for such occasions, and had a couple of minor flare-ups, including one involving Alan Stubbs. Overall, it was a good exercise for the first-team men chosen.
Head coach Dr Jo Venglos actually got worked up himself - a rare occurrence - when he complained vociferously to the fourth official that Xerez (the team is spelt differently from the town, Jerez) had used more substitutes, namely four, than had been agreed.
Celtic might have scored in the first half but that could also have been said of the Spaniards. On the whole, Celtic were probably worth their lead when it came in 62 minutes after a cross from Vidar Riseth was headed into the net by Henrik Larsson.
Stubbs, who had gone to the assistance of Paul Lambert in that earlier incident, was booked for a foul in the second half.
Lambert took a knock in the first period but was able to play the 90 minutes. David Hannah replaced youngster John Paul McBride early in the second half.
At the end, captain Tom Boyd was presented with the Brandy Trophy put up for the winners.
