Trivia

  • Huns win the league effectively, 10pts plus game in hand in front.
  • Scott Brown wrongly red carded whilst Lafferty let off with nothing in a nothing tangle! Pathetic.
  • Hacking galore by the Huns and get away with too much.
  • War casualty from the Falklands War, Simon Weston, Guest of honour at game (crude attempt by Huns to pander to their support). Minute silence for ex-Rangers goalkeeper Gerry Neef who died recently also.

Rangers 1 – 0 Celtic

BBC

By Thomas McGuigan

Rangers moved a step closer to securing a second successive Scottish Premier League title with victory over 10-man Celtic in a pulsating Old Firm derby.

Robbie Keane was denied a debut goal when Allan McGregor twice saved brilliantly to thwart the striker.

Rangers had a Maurice Edu goal chalked off for Kenny Miller's handball.

Celtic captain Scott Brown was controversially red-carded following a clash with Kyle Lafferty before Edu scrambled home the winner at Ibrox.

The two headline-makers of the week were involved within the opening 40 seconds of an action-packed Glasgow derby.

Keane could have given Celtic the lead but McGregor was equal to the Republic of Ireland international's shot.

Play raged to the other end and Kris Boyd rounded Artur Boruc but his shot found the side netting.

With referees under the spotlight this week, Dougie McDonald was eager to put his stamp on the game and he produced the yellow card twice in the opening 10 minutes.

Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra was cautioned for a crude challenge on Keane, before Marc-Antoine Fortune was booked for deliberate handball.

The opening quarter was played at a furious pace and Keane floated a free-kick over the bar from the edge of the area after Sasa Papac clattered Diomansy Kamara.

Rangers midfielder Edu, on as a substitute for the injured Lee McCulloch, thought he had given the hosts the lead when he drilled home from the edge of the area.

But the goal was rightly chalked off by the referee after Miller had handled in the box.

Boruc soon after reacted brilliantly to deny Miller after a long ball through the middle had dissected the Celtic defence.

Rangers had McGregor to thank 10 minutes before half time when he superbly blocked Keane's volley after the ball broke to the on-loan Tottenham striker at the edge of the box.

Fortune spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock just before the break when he danced away from Bougherra and David Weir, only to screw his effort wide.

Thomas Rogne's replacement Darren O'Dea saved a certain goal in the 50th minute with a slide tackle to nick the ball away from Boyd just as the striker was about to pull the trigger.

The ball broke to Edu and there were faint appeals for a penalty as he and Andreas Hinkel tussled for possession.

Rangers appeared content to sit deep and hit Celtic on the break and Steven Davis stung Boruc's palms with a wicked low drive from 18 yards and the visitors somehow scrambled clear.

Landy N'Guemo wasted a chance to send Fortune clear as a promising counter attack petered out.

Celtic threw on Georgios Samaras for the ineffective Aiden McGeady as manager Tony Mowbray sought a goal to keep his side's faint title hopes alive.

The toothless visitors were reduced to 10 men with 66 minutes gone when Brown received a straight red after he and Lafferty clashed, but it looked a harsh decision as the Rangers man tumbled to the ground.

Brown's dismissal knocked Celtic off their stride and Rangers looked to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Edu blazed over the bar after receiving a beautiful cross from Sasa Papac and Boruc denied Papac with seconds remaining.

But Rangers were not to be denied and, after Boyd's effort was blocked on the line, Edu bundled the ball home for the winner.

Rangers, who move 10 points ahead with a game in hand, will believe the victory all but secures their second successive title.

TONY MOWBRAY admits the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title can only be lost by Rangers following Celtic’s agonising defeat at Ibrox yesterday.
In an absorbing afternoon in Govan, Hoops skipper Scott Brown was controversially shown a straight red card by referee Dougie McDonald in the 65th minute after wrestling with Kyle Lafferty but it looked like the visitors would see the game out.
However, in the final seconds of the three added minutes, Edu, on earlier for Lee McCulloch, bundled the ball over the line following a goalmouth scramble to take Walter Smith’s side 10 points clear with a game in hand.
"We have to keep going and try win every game," the Celtic boss said.
"But it’s fair to say it’s there for Rangers to lose. However, strange things have happened in football.
"But we are all sensible enough to know we need Rangers to slip up along the way.
"I thought we would see the game out but it wasn’t to be. We have been there before this season. A corner kick in the last minute of injury time, and the last opportunity and we lose a goal. Maybe that’s the youthfulness of the defensive unit but a lot of credit to them, they stuck to their task after the sending off."
Mowbray had not seen the Brown dismissal again on TV but claimed plenty in the Celtic dressing room believed there are grounds for appeal: "They thought it was a very harsh decision."
And last night Celtic confirmed they will appeal the red card decision.
Mowbray also denied he would have to exert a calming influence on Brown, whom he recently made his captain. He said: "I’m not there to change Scott from the combative footballer he is, that’s what makes him the player he is. He hasn’t a case to answer with me."
Mowbray tried hard to refrain from criticising referee McDonald, who had been under added pressure from the Parkhead camp who let it be known earlier in the week that they were aggrieved at decisions which they believed had gone against them this season – including in the two previous games against Rangers.
McDonald booked Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra and Hoops striker Marc-Antoine Fortune early in the game and then ruled out a goal by Edu for handball by his Ibrox team mate Kenny Miller.
However, asked if Bougherra was perhaps fortunate to escape further punishment after subsequently committing several more fouls, the Celtic boss said: "I don’t want to comment, I will get into trouble but the referee gave himself a difficult job with early bookings.
"There was a sense early on that the game wasn’t going to finish with 22 players on the field but maybe that was his tactic, to stamp his authority on the game but I think he gave himself a few problems."
Mowbray revealed that teenage stopper Thomas Rogne, making his Old Firm debut, sustained a hamstring injury which caused him to be replaced by Darren O’Dea.
Rangers boss Walter Smith accused the unnamed Celtic source who this week revealed the club’s unhappiness with the performance of referees of putting unnecessary pressure on McDonald. He called for the club to be open about any grievances with officials rather than hiding behind anonymous leaks.
"I thought the referee handled the game very well today," said Smith. "It was an unfair circumstance he was placed in this week. The Old Firm games are always awkward, everybody comes under scrutiny. But it would be nice, if somebody was going to criticise the referee, that they come out of the closet and do it rather than do it in an anonymous manner."
Smith added: "I’ll need to do an Arsene Wenger on the red card because I missed our goal that was disallowed and I missed the ordering-off as well."
