Review

Good display, winning as a team now compared to earlier in season where we relied on Paddy or hoops to pull something out for us.

Brown should stay on right, much improved. Actually looks dangerous unlike throuh the middle where he looks lost when he gets the ball. Thought Ledley did well, maybe more space suits him? Think anyone playing beside Kayal will do good and look good.

Hooper is just a good striker, and needs to pick up again.

Commons stole the show with a goal in his debut after just 6mins and then setting up another with a corner.

Celtic sweep aside woeful Aberdeen to reach CIS Cup final

Ewan Murray at Hampden Park
* guardian.co.uk, Saturday 29 January 2011 17.46 GMT

Any lingering Hampden Park ghosts were exorcised by Celtic within 34 ruthless minutes. This venue housed Neil Lennon's most harrowing occasion as the Celtic manager, Ross County inflicting a Scottish Cup semi-final defeat on them last season. But Celtic's return to Hampden proved perfectly straightforward for Lennon.

Kris Commons, Charlie Mulgrew, Anthony Stokes and Thomas Rogne had this League Cup semi-final settled 11 minutes before the interval. The prospect of an Old Firm final on 20 March remains, with Rangers facing Motherwell tomorrow for the right to meet Celtic.

This tournament is generally regarded as the lesser of Scotland's two knockout competitions. Still, it has special value for Lennon as he looks to claim his first honour in management.

Not even a dreadful playing surface could hamper Celtic's touch. That pitch had triggered headshaking from Lennon before kick-off. The manager had little with which to concern himself thereafter.

The meekness of what they were up against here must be taken into account, but Lennon's desire to see his team display a clinical edge appears to be finally bearing fruit. Celtic are in fine fettle heading into a tantalising week that will see them face Aberdeen again, away from home, on Tuesday before they head to Ibrox for a Scottish Cup meeting with Rangers.

You would have thought Aberdeen were beyond capitulations such as this. Celtic were competent and clinical in the opening period yet nowhere near as impressive as three days earlier, when they eased past Hearts.

Lennon's cause was therefore aided by how utterly abject the north-east side were, particularly in defence. Aberdeen had lost 9-0 to Celtic in November but a subsequent change of manager has steadied things at Pittodrie. Craig Brown, who enjoyed a successful time at Hampden when in charge of the Scottish national team, could only look on in horror. Brown's predecessor, Mark McGhee, would observe that mental fragility is not always wiped out by fresh management.

Commons's desire to be known as a valuable Celtic player, rather than one who spurned Rangers to sign up at Parkhead, was aided by virtually his first touch in green and white. The debutant brilliantly chipped Jamie Langfield in the Aberdeen goal with five minutes played; at that stage, though, there was little indication of what was to follow.

Mulgrew, a former Aberdeen player, nodded home at close range after Rogne had knocked a Commons corner into his path. Celtic's third followed a similar pattern, Mulgrew lobbing to the back post with Rogne heading past Langfield.

An act of blatant stupidity from Derek Young prompted goal No4 and an early exit for scores of Aberdeen's travelling contingent. Young handled a Stokes free-kick inside his own penalty area when there appeared no need whatsoever to do so. Celtic's Irish striker maintained his recent impressive scoring run by slamming home from 12 yards.

It would have been a sad indictment of Brown's players if they had not summoned some sort of response after the break. Scott Vernon duly claimed a consolation goal with a header from Robert Milsom's searching free-kick.

The departure of Rogne immediately after Aberdeen's goal, apparently because of injury, will hasten Celtic's desire to sign a centre-back before the transfer window closes. The Norwegian, bizarrely given Lennon's rapid recruitment of players, started the afternoon as the only fit Celtic player for that position.

If Aberdeen are as dismal on Tuesday, that said, the deployment of an opposition defence may be unnecessary.

Aberdeen 1-4 Celtic (BBC)

By Clive Lindsay
Kris Commons inspired Celtic as they destroyed Aberdeen with four goals in the opening 33 minutes to swagger into the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.
New signing Commons set them on their way with a sublime chip into the far corner after five minutes.
Former Aberdeen defender Charlie Mulgrew headed the second four minutes later and Thomas Rogne rose to finish for the third after 20 minutes.
Anthony Stokes made it 4-0 before Scott Vernon's headed reply.

Many of 12,000-odd Aberdeen fans had taken Celtic's fourth goal as a signal to desert Hampden with their dream of a first final since May 2000 having already virtually disappeared.
Celtic dropped the pace, sparing the Dons the spectre of a repeat of that historic 9-0 Scottish Premier League defeat in November, safe in the knowledge that they will face Motherwell or Rangers in the final.
Commons had come straight into the Celtic starting line-up after his transfer from Derby County, replacing the injured James Forrest on the wing.
And the Scotland international made a dream start when he picked the ball up 18 yards from goal and chipped it into the far corner of the net over the despairing figure of goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.
Scott Brown, whose shown a vast improvement in form in recent weeks, was the driving force for Celtic, firing long-range efforts wide either side of that opener and then winning the corner that led to Celtic's second.
Commons' cross was headed towards goal by Anthony Stokes and Mulgrew rose above his marker to send it into the net off the underside of the crossbar from point-blank range against his former club.
Aberdeen immediately had a chance to reduce the deficit when a precise through ball from Chris Maguire set up strike partner Vernon, but the Englishman's low shot hit the outside of the post.
That provided only a moments' respite for the team in red as Joe Ledley chested the ball into the path of Stokes, whose half-volley was turned brilliantly on to the top of the crossbar by Langfield.
The Dons goalkeeper looked slow seconds later, however, when Rogne rose unmarked 12 yards out and headed low into the corner of the net.
Aberdeen had chances of their own, with Rob Milsom firing over from range and Maguire having a couple of efforts charged down on the edge of the penalty box.
Dons boss Craig Brown hauled off central defender Nikola Vujadinovic after 27 minutes, introducing Ryan Jack into midfield as he attempted to find a formation capable of subduing Celtic while the Serbian headed straight up the tunnel minus his discarded shirt.
Jack had been replaced in the starting line-up with defender David McNamee as Brown attempted to add steel and experience to his midfield.
However, any hope that the youngster could inspire a turnaround of momentous proportions were ended by a moment of madness from Derek Young – in the starting line-up in place of cup-tied striker Nick Blackman, who helped Motherwell into the other semi-final.
The midfielder raised a hand high above his head to clear a Gary Hooper free-kick that was curling above the defensive wall and Stokes sent Langfield the wrong way from the penalty spot.
Aberdeen responded after the break as they sought to restore some pride and Maguire squandered a chance when he rounded goalkeeper Forster but blasted over the crossbar with his effort from wide inside the penalty box.
The Dons did get one back after 61 minutes, with Vernon rising to head in a 15-yard header from a Milsom free-kick.
Vernon missed a chance to reduce the arrears further with five minutes remaining, firing over from six yards after a good run and pass from substitute Josh Megennis.
Mark Wilson was on hand to clear off the line after Vernon rounded Forster in the dying seconds.
So, as Celtic moved into yet another cup final, the Dons had to make do with a second-half performance that might give them some heart ahead of the midweek league meeting between the sides.
