Review

I think we got away with it today. Never looked like scoring all game. We were playing a team who we absolutely thumped on several occasions last season yet we effectively playing a 4-5-1 formation with Stokes wide left and an off form Hooper as our lone striker. Far too cautious.

I said it during the match thread just before we scored and I'll say it again – a slow lumbering centre half's only asset is to win the balls in the air and Dan was getting horsed at almost every high ball that was played towards him. When you throw in the fact that he has the turning speed of an oil tanker and the positional sense of Stevie Wonder waiting to catch a Gary Owen in a game of rugby we have a problem here. Oh and why was he not good enough to play v Hibs but is Captain in this game?

Anyway a win is a win.

Emilio Izaguirre's broken leg clouds Celtic victory at Aberdeen

Scottish Premier League Aberdeen 0 Celtic 1

  • Stokes 74
  • guardian.co.uk, Sunday 7 August 2011 16.06 BST
A hard-fought victory for Celtic was overshadowed by the likelihood of a long-term absence for Emilio Izaguirre. The Honduran full-back, Scotland's player of the year last season and rated at £10m amid admiring glances from England, suffered a broken right leg in the early stages at Pittodrie.
"It is a huge blow for us and the player," said Celtic's manager, Neil Lennon. "It's his fibula, it's fractured. I don't know howlong he will be out for, he is being assessed just now to see whether or not he requires surgery. If he does, it will be three months anyway."
The 25-year-old landed badly amid what was a legal challenge by the Aberdeen midfielder Peter Pawlett, after 15 minutes. Lennon held his head in his hands when informed by his club doctor during the match about the diagnosis for Izaguirre.
"You can tell by the players' reaction," Lennon said. "Emilio isn't the type to feign injury. The concern was immediate. We might have to look now for a left-back."
Otherwise, Lennon could take comfort from the claiming of three points in a match where his team failed to reach anything like their best. That said, Aberdeen's lack of punch meant a scoreless draw always looked like the worst Celtic would take back to Glasgow.
"We made it nervous for ourselves," Lennon said. "We had so many chances but our decision making in the final third was poor. We tried to walk the ball into the net at times. That's a bad habit to have."
More encouraging for Lennon was the confident competitive debut of the former Cardiff defender Adam Matthews. A flurry of activity in front of the Aberdeen goal immediately before the interval belied a poor first half. Celtic's Gary Hooper watched an effort deflected over the crossbar, with Scott Vernon's long-range attempt the closest the hosts came to breaking the deadlock.
Celtic had a legitimate penalty claim denied when Hooper looked to be hauled to the ground by Andrew Considine. That incident paled into insignificance as Anthony Stokes provided the definitive intervention. Kris Commons, who otherwise endured an error-strewn afternoon, robbed Ricky Foster in starting the move which Stokes rounded off. After an interchange of passes between the pair, Stokes fired home Commons' cutback for his second goal in as many league matches.
"We committed suicide with a careless error," said the Aberdeen manager, CraigBrown, of Foster's actions. "He [Foster] thought he was impeded. But he would do."
There seemed little chance of an Aberdeen revival, James Forrest and Georgios Samaras going close to doubling Celtic's advantage.
The Polish goalkeeper Grzegorz Sandomierski could arrive in Glasgow as early as Monday, with Celtic closing in on a deal for the 21-year-old. "He is a goalie we likeand someone with huge potential," Lennon said.

Stokes scored the only goal of the game at Pittodrie Anthony Stokes scored the only goal of the game as Celtic overcame stiff Aberdeen resistance to record a second league win that came at a price.
Celtic lost full-back Emilio Izaguirre to a suspected broken ankle after only 15 minutes at Pittodrie.
Kris Commons and Aberdeen's Scott Vernon both tested the respective goalkeepers in an exciting first half.
Vernon failed to connect in front of goal after the break before Stokes powered in the 74th-minute winner.
And the victory puts Celtic one point clear of Dundee United and St Mirren at the top of the Scottish Premier League – and with a game in hand – after two wins, although Motherwell would leapfrog them all should they defeat Hearts later.
Former Cardiff right-back Adam Matthews had been handed his competitive debut for Celtic in place of the injured Mark Wilson, while Daniel Majstorovic was in for the crocked Glenn Loovens.
But it was the Dons rearguard, where the experienced Rory McArdle had replacing Clark Robertson, who were under pressure immediately after kick-off.
A 25-yard Kris Commons drive, pushed comfortably for a corner by on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper David Gonzalez, was the closest they came to making their early pressure tell.
The Dons settled and worked their way into the game, with Darren Mackie's pace worrying Majstorovic.
Peter Pawlett was beginning to give Izaguirre a hard time on the Aberdeen right and a fair but tough challenge left the Honduran writhing in pain before being stretchered off.
Pawlett's enthusiasm was dampened moments later when he was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Izaguirre's replacement, Charlie Mulgrew.
Celtic responded to the loss of last season's player of the year by re-establishing control and Beram Kayal sent a 20-yard drive whizzing over the crossbar as the pressure built once more.
The Dons threatened on the break and Scott Vernon's low effort from 20 yards was beaten away by goalkeeper Lukasz Zaluska.
Aberdeen survived some intense pressure to go in level at half time and it was Ki Sung-Yeung who was first to go close after the break with a glancing header that flew a yard wide.
Vernon missed an opportunity at the other end when strike partner Mackie flashed a ball across the face of goal and the Englishman failed to connect under pressure from Kelvin Wilson.
A mistake by Richard Foster led to Celtic's breakthrough when the Aberdeen captain was dispossessed by Commons.
Stokes played it wide to the Scotland winger, whose return ball into the middle was blasted low into the net from 14 yards by the Irishman.
Gonzalez did well to save with his legs as Celtic substitute James Forrest was put clear behind the defence, but one goal was enough to give the Glasgow side a win they just about deserved.
