Edinburgh-born left-back on Celtic's books as a youngster. He either joined from Tranent Juniors, or was 'farmed out' to them by Celtic in 1976-77.

The following season he played his football for Musselburgh Windsor, then joined Hearts in 1978. In two seasons with the Jam Farts he amassed 32 league appearances, before switching to cross-city rivals Hibernian in 1980. Hibernian were then languishing in Division One, despite the efforts of a certain George Best.

Black appeared just twice for Hibs then made three appearances for East Fife. Finished the season with Berwick Rangers making 14 appearances and scoring two goals in Division One. Followed that up with 18 games for Berwick in 1981-82 before switching to the romantically-named Ormiston Primrose.

Black's son – also Ian – followed in his dad's footsteps by joining Hearts from Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2009. The younger Black is a 'combative' midfielder capped by Scotland at B level.
