Outside-left James Carlin signed for Celtic in October 1896 from Paisley Celtic.

He was almost exclusively a reserve at Parkhead but made a solitary first team appearance when called up to the side at the last minute to take the place of the ineligible John Neilson in a vital league tie at home to Dundee on 20th February 1897.

The young James Carlin (aged only 19) was reported to have been out of his depth as Dundee won the crucial encounter 1-0.

The first team appears to have been quite unsettled with multiple changes in the forwards over the second half of the season. He never won another chance with the First XI in a competitive match.

Celtic had just lost the league title and had been humiliated in the Scottish Cup by Arthurlie. Things had to change it seemed.

Celtic settled for Henderson and King for the no.11 spot into the next season, but by this time James Carlin had already left Celtic in May 1897 for Victoria United.
