Celtic Career Review

Peter Davis

Irish goalkeeping prospect brought over early in 1995/96 from Shelbourne. He challenged Andy McCondichie for the youth team gloves before the arrival of Barry John Corr and compatriot James Gallagher the following year which made things even more competitive.

At some point around Spring 1997 he dropped out of the reckoning at Celtic, shortly after keeping goal in the BP Youth Cup semi final win on 20th March 1997.

He was next to be found hitting the headlines while playing for Armadale Thistle under Martin Clark (son of John) in September 1998, when Junior Football Association beaks handed down a massively disproportionate 6 year ban. Apparently the teenaged Davis had precipitated a heinous, Di Canio-style push on the referee upon receipt of a red card in an obscure 'East of Scotland Cup' match against Bonnyrigg Rose. He was subsequently sacked by the club while his appeal was hastily thrown out the following month.

The case was a piece of nonsense because Davis received two yellows for alleged 'dissent' and the gentle 'push' to the chest did not even knock over the flaccid whistler. In fact the offending referee was the nephew of World Cup failure Willie Ormond whilst his pal, the East Region Juniors' secretary, had been watching events unfold from the stand with steam billowing from his ears.

"He gave me a two-handed, violent push, just like what Paolo Di Canio did," Ormond sobbed at the time.

Armadale Thistle's own attention-seeking secretary totally prejudiced the case by bragging: "We suspended Peter until his case was heard but we had already made up our mind to replace him."

When Di Canio duly received a sensible ban for his push there was a degree of embarrassment in Junior circles and then Davis' ban was quietly cut to a still ludicrous two years. Still in Scotland, Davis resumed his Junior career after the two years and turned out for East Kilbride Thistle, Larkhall Thistle and Baillieston. Since the 2003 demise of the latter, he appears to have retired.
