BiogFridjonsson, Holmbert - The Celtic Wiki

Holmbert arrived at Celtic a young player, with the belief that he had the ability to make his mark at the club. An Icelander, the small populated country was going through a bit of a high folloiwng some relative better performances and success at the international level.

Incredible as it may sound, but Iceland were on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup finals for 2014, only to lose in the knock out qualifiers. For such a small country (by population) it was an incredible achievement and helped raise their game and profile.

With agents alerted to the potential, inevitably there would be interesting transfers. Celtic, desperate for a regular goal scorer after failing to fund anyone suitable to replace the lost Gary Hooper, bought poorly.

Young, developing and a fair record already, he was another cheap hopeful purchase for the club in these austere times. He signed a four year contract for a nominal transfer fee of £100k, and things looked up for him.

Yet he never won a place in the side in his first half season under Neil Lennon.

New manager Deila arrived in the summer of 2014, and to the surprise of many Holmbert was loaned out tout suite to Brøndby (Denmark). Whilst some might have thought that a Scandanavian manager would work well with Holmbert, it was never tried out. The first team was looking for strikers, especially with the loss of Hooper et al, but the club seemed to prefer to take in transfers & loan signings instead.

The new management team it seemed weren't convinced of his potential, and this new star didn't even get a sniff.

Hólmbert Friðjónsson signed for KR Reykjavik on a permanent deal after he was released in the summer of 2015.
He never got a start for the Celts.

We wish him the best.
