Andy Gutman had quite an event packed introduction to Celtic. He had been on a one week trial at Sevco in 2018, and it fell through. RangersNews had called him: “one of the best players in college soccer”.

Then a year later, he was on Celtic’s radar having won the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year Award in the US, and then won the Hermann Trophy, which is considered the most prestigious award for a US college football (‘soccer’) player.

He came on trial in January 2019 to Celtic and was reported to be signing, only to then disappear as supposedly things were said to have fallen through. Then on the final day of the transfer day he was back in at Celtic, and signed on the dotted line. He was then sent back to the US on loan to Nashville FC, only for the US MLS to disapprove of the loan, and he was back at Celtic. He finally got a loan back in the US with Charlotte Independence within days.

He’d become lost & forgotten over the in the US, but as Celtic faltered and collapsed in season 2020/21 in the aim for ten league titles in a row, there was massive chaos at the club. This meant that those out on the fringes were being pushed out further. This could have created chances for some but actually didn’t.

In the demoralised environment at Celtic, complicated by restrictions for travel, there was little light at the end of the tunnel. Covid restrictions if anything was the biggest barrier to his hopes for a move to Scotland to prove himself. Celtic had already a roster of failed transfers, and despite not having played for the first team, he was lumped into that list.

Andrew Gutman completed his permanent transfer to Atlanta Utd on 12 March 2021, and ironically was sent on loan to New York Red Bulls which was becoming a home for ex-Celts there, which was managed by ex-Celtic manager Ronny Deila.

New Celtic full-back Andrew Gutman’s proposed loan to Nashville has been rejected by Major League Soccer.

The 22-year-old signed a three-and-a-half-year contract on Thursday with the Scottish Premiership leaders.

The Glasgow club wanted to send the American on loan to the United Soccer League side, but the MLS, which Nashville are due to join next year, refused to sanction the deal.

“We wish Andrew the best this season,” said a Nashville statement.

Gutman, who had previously been on trial with Rangers, signed for Celtic on transfer deadline day along with fellow American Manny Perez.

Perez, a USA Under-20 international who also impressed on trial, is due to return to North Carolina on loan.

Gutman, who was with Indiana Hoosiers, last year won the Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the best male and female college footballers in the United States.

Andrew Gutman is heading got the Celtic exit door without making a top team appearance for the Hoops.

The American defender is in talks with FC Cincinnati over a permanent move, having been back in the States on loan since 2019.

He signed on at Celtic Park earlier that year following a successful trial period, but couldn’t make the switch immediately due to work permit problems.

That necessitated a loan to USL side Charlotte Independence, who were managed for ex-Celtic coach John McGuinness.

A loan to MLS outfit Cincinnati followed, and the club confirmed they were in discussion as they updated fans on upcoming changes to their squad, saying: “The club is in current negotiations and discussions with Andrew Gutman, Joseph-Claude Gyau, Nick Hagglund, Caleb Stanko and Przemysław Tytoń about their futures with FC Cincinnati.”

It looks like Gutman will depart despite penning a three-year contract last year, having initially gone on trial with rivals Rangers before signing for Neil Lennon.

“Right now, I’m planning on going back to Celtic and training for a month until around December,” he said after joining Cincinnati last year.

“After that I’ll take a few weeks off to hang around with my family.

“They’re definitely in-season but they have such a big squad. So the guys that aren’t in the squad for the games will have training sessions.

“I’ll have a good stint of training with them just to get back in front of their faces and show them my qualities again. It will be good.

“I’ve been through two pre-seasons this year so I definitely to give my body a break at some point.

“But I think, with two and a half months until our next pre season here, I definitely want to continue just a little bit longer if I can then hopefully get six weeks off to regenerate.”
