BiogLawrie, William - Pic

Dumfries-born goalkeeper William Lawrie signed for Celtic from Clydebank Juniors in October 1919 as cover for Charlie Shaw. He was:

A lad of promise… full of enthusiasm confident and hopeful… another excellent capture by Mr Maley.

He made his debut in place of the injured Shaw on 25th October 1919 in a 3-1 league win over Queen’s Park at Celtic Park. He would play the next two league matches a 2-1 win over Morton away and then finally a 1-1 draw at home to Falkirk, before the great Shaw would return to the side fully fit.

After that Willie Lawrie was not to make another senior appearance and eventually left for Aberdeen in May 1921.

The challenge to overtake Charlie Shaw was never going to be an easy one for any player, but at least he was to be able to look back on a record with Celtic that was in unbeaten sides, albeit that he was unable to keep a clean-sheet in goals.

Willie Lawrie was a blacksmith by trade.

Records show that he made few appearances for Aberdeen, and after his time at Aberdeen he moved on to Peterhead in 1924.
