Michael McGovern was a backup goalkeeper for Celtic and though he made the bench quite a few times and played in a good number of Friendlies and Testimonials he never made a full first team debut.

McGovern joined Celtic in 2001 directly from Enniskillen Town and started playing with the U18’s. He was first choice goalkeeper for the U18’s in season 02/03 and made his first representative appearance the following season in a closed door Friendly against Livingston in September 2003. This season he also made a number of bench spots without getting on towards the end of the season due to a goalkeeping crisis. These included the away Fourth Round UEFA Cup tie against Barcelona in the Nou Camp.

From these heady heights McGovern returned to the fold of Reserve games, Friendlies and Testimonials. In December 2004 he went on loan to Stranraer for the remainder of that season making nineteen appearances. In season 06/07 he joined St. Johnstone on a one-month emergency loan, playing once before being dropped. He made his last appearance on the pre-season tour of Switzerland on 7/7/07 against Young Boys Berne but the date was not so lucky for McGovern and he let in four goals. In March 2008, McGovern received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland squad.

On 17 June 2008, McGovern agreed a pre-contract move to Dundee United, signing a one-year deal, as backup goalkeeper to Lukasz Zaluska. He was released at the end of the season

In July 2009 he joined Ross County.
