An Irish prospect brought over to play with the Boys Club along with his pal, Paddy Fitzpatrick. The duo's fathers - also Tim and Paddy - had played together for Wexford League team Town Celtic, and it was from the same club that the younger McGrath joined Celtic. He had earlier been attached to Wexford Albion youths until the age of fourteen.
A willowy left-sided defender, McGrath was an Irish youth team international and successfully established himself as a member of Celtic's U18 panel in his first season with the club. However, after moving up to the reserves he apparently suffered with homesickness and effected his egress from the club during 1997/98 in order to return home.
Once back in Ireland he wasted little time in joining Waterford United for the new season - unlike Fitzpatrick who opted to remain in Scotland with Motherwell. Two years as a first team regular followed for McGrath before he repaired to local football with original club Town Celtic.
A 2009 transfer to First Division Wexford Youths FC brought to an end a long and successful spell and heralded a return to senior football for McGrath: a move he may even had made a year earlier but for a serious cruciate ligament injury.
